The Sports City of Gandia – a centre for sporting excellence in Spain!
Well, finally the La Safor area looks set to be put onto the map of Spain, with a Centre of Sporting Excellence planned – to be known as the Sports City of Gandia!
Plans are now being made to develop the Raco de Tomba area of Marxuquera into a sports city: where there will be an 18 hole golf course, a horse racing track, tennis courts and a training area for soccer.
This is excellent news, not least because the local authorities in Gandia have finally realised that the potential for the development of the economy in La Safor should not be dependent solely upon the beach. Instead, they have concluded that the La Safor area should be exploited for its potential as an obvious place for sporting excellence.
Certainly, it would be hard to find a better location for a centre of sporting excellence than that of Raco de Tomba, just outside Gandia. Whilst the area is strikingly beautiful, its real benefit comes from the fact that it has excellent communications including a direct rail link from nearby Valencia City (and its international airport) and an exit from the arterial (north/south) AP7 motorway.
Meanwhile, Gandia (a town of 80,000 people) is highly regarded for its sophistication and extensive amenities. These include many hotels, a fine marina, a commercial port, a wide variety of restaurants and a main shopping area that is the envy of many Spanish towns. Complementing all of this are beaches that are famous throughout Spain for their miles of golden sand, their Blue Flag rating and the excellence of their facilities.
To make matters better, the Gandia area is blessed with an astonishingly user-friendly environment for sports people. The climate is technically temperate and provides for warm summers and warm, dry winters. Indeed, the Gandia area has some 320 dry days a year – which is a sports persons dream (almost irrespective of the sport!).
Finally, the landscape around Gandia is ideal for a range of sports beyond that of those planned at the Sports City of Gandia. Raco de Tomba is surrounded by dramatic mountains that overlook long, flat valleys of citrus groves which are criss-crossed by tracks and quiet road that are ideal for runners, cyclists (mountain bike and road) and horse riders. Equally, the area has some startlingly fine rock climbing with the crag at Raco de Tomba itself famous throughout Europe for the excellence of its high grade sports routes.
Without doubt, Raco de Tomba is the perfect place for a sports city and, if developed to the high standards intended, it looks likely to become a Centre of Excellence for sport in Spain. This is something that should be welcomed by the people of Gandia, who are bound to benefit from both the facilities and the ancillary income generated by sports people coming to Gandia. Vitally, Gandia Sports City will produce money and employment throughout the year. This is very desirable and its impact upon the economy of La Safor may be very considerable.
So – let us all hope that the plans for Sports City of Gandia come to fruition soon!
